July 12 (Bloomberg) -- Canada's West Edmonton Mall, the world's largest indoor shopping center, will be closed for an undetermined period after hail damaged its roof and caused the building to flood, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.
Pipes on the second floor burst during a storm yesterday, leaving water in parts of the 800-store mall ankle-deep, the state-owned broadcaster reported on its Web site. About 30,000 people were evacuated from the mall, in Alberta's capital city of Edmonton, as water cascaded down and backed up through storm drains on the ground level, the CBC said.
Insurance adjusters are assessing damage to areas such as the indoor ice rink and amusement park, both of which flooded, the CBC reported. Hailstones as large as baseballs ripped open sections of the mall's roof, and rain flooded basements and Edmonton city streets.
The shopping center is owned by Triple Five Properties, which is closely held and controlled by the Ghermezian family.
Since our complex where we rented a townhouse 12 days ago was actually evacuated yesterday, we consider ourselves lucky:))
In our country side we had just a little bit of a rain...
This weather simply sucks!!!!
